Expecting Baby Number two: A Family Studio Maternity Session
Usually I try to combine my Maternity+Newborn sessions together in a blog – but this session in particular has so many beautiful moments I had to write two blogs!
You can view the newborn session here: Welcoming Baby Number Two
There is something especially meaningful about maternity sessions for families expecting their second child. This season holds a mix of excitement, anticipation, and a touch of nostalgia as parents to grow their family once again – this time with a little one already eager to step into their new role as big sibling.
This recent studio maternity session captured exactly that.
Though I might be a little biased with this being my brother with his wife and daughter.
Big sibling stole the show at times, proudly hugging mom’s belly and sneaking kisses in between bursts of playful energy. Those unscripted moments often become parents’ favorite images later on — the ones that show the transition from a family of three to four.
Studio sessions are perfect for maternity portraits with young children because they’re comfortable, controlled, and relaxed. Parents can focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about weather, locations, or chasing toddlers across a park. The result is a collection of portraits that feel warm, polished, and deeply personal.
I loved the outfit choices here, Mom went with a neutral oatmeal color dress for her family photos, a blue dress representing the baby being a bow for her photos with her baby bump and daughter, but my favorite had to be the very casual white button down and jeans really showing off her baby bump. I also took this moment to use one of my GOBOs to create a window lighting affect. Which I absolutely LOVED!
One thing we did for mama with her photos was give her both baby bump re-touched images as well as unedited images. She was on blood thinners which caused bruising. I know a lot of moms experienced this process, so I thought it would be a good example of showing what your images could look like. I think we both ended up loving the un-edited images. It shows how much her son was truly loved and fought for before arrival. I’m just so proud of my sweet family.
What I love most about these sessions is knowing these images will soon become part of the family’s story — shown to the new baby years from now, reminding them how eagerly they were awaited.
To this growing family: thank you for trusting me to document such a special chapter. I can't wait to meet your newest little one soon.
Your story deserves to be remembered.
